Amy Jade Winehouse was an English singer. She is known for her powerful deep contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz. On what would have been the 28th birthday of Amy Winehouse, her duet with Tony Bennett is being released to commemorate the late singer. Proceeds from the track, titled "Body and Soul," will go to support the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
Speaking with CNN, Amy's father Mitch Winehouse describes the foundation, saying "the mission statement is very much to help children who are suffering from economic disadvantage, who are ill, who are suffering with drug abuse; children and young adults who need help desperately." Bennett and she recorded the single just months before she died in late July.
"Our singing, it just blended perfectly. It couldn't have been better," Winehouse says of their collaboration in a video posted on the foundation's site. According to People, the Winehouse family - who have been speaking out about Amy's passing in hopes of raising awareness for the foundation - will mark Amy's birthday quietly. Mitch will join Bennett for the CD launch in New York later this week. Mitch told Piers Morgan on "Piers Morgan Tonight" Tuesday, "My memories of her obviously will never fade, she's my daughter.
But the love that she had for her family and her friends...and her generosity, that's what I'll remember most." With tears in his eyes, Mitch continued that he thinks his daughter's legacy will be her music. "Hopefully there will be some more music, I think there's a great deal to come," he went on. "And her foundation's going to help thousands and thousands of children. What better legacy could you want than that?"
